By Ralph Mazzanti and Ron Baker, Rice Research Verification Program Coordinators
In the south, the Chicot Co. field has been harvested with a dry yield of 219 bu/ac. The average harvest moisture was 19.6%. The Lee Co. field has reached maturity and is draining. All other fields are ready for harvest with some corn being harvested prior to the rice.
In the north, six of the eight program fields are now mature and were drying down for harvest before the rains over the last few days postponed that progress. Jackson, White and Craighead are expected to be the first fields to reach harvest moisture once sunny days return. Woodruff progressed rapidly this past week and is already showing mature grains. Rice stink bugs remain under control in the field but the cooler than usual August weather at heading has favored false smut which is now easily found across the field despite tightly controlled nitrogen rates.
