Rice Research Verification Program Update for June 15, 2015
Author: Ron Baker, Rice Research Verification Program Coordinator

South Arkansas:  Eight out of nine fields are now flooded and are looking good.  The Jefferson Co. field is waiting on levee gates and should be sprayed, fertilized, and the flood started in the next few days.  Seeing some rice water weevil scarring but no fields reaching threshold for treatment.  The welcomed heat units have rice catching up on maturity.  Noticing a few stink bugs already around edges on grass weeds as we enter the fields.  Three fields (Arkansas, Desha, and Chicot) are fast approaching ½-inch internode elongation.  Mid-season fertilizer applications are scheduled for conventional varieties.

North Arkansas:  All eight fields have received preflood N applications and are either flooded up or are in the process of flooding up.  Warmer weather has helped a great deal and the fields have developed much closer to their DD50 predicted growth stage when compared to the first of June.  Although there is still some noticeable unevenness of growth in each field; overall, the fields are doing well and it is expected that by midseason field development will have evened out enough for an effective midseason N application.  No rice water weevil treatments have been necessary.  One field, Mississippi Co., did not require a post-emergence herbicide application before flood-up.
