Arkansas Corn and Grain Sorghum Weekly Update – August 8, 2014
Author: Kevin Lawson, Program Associate - Corn & Grain Sorghum Verification

Corn and Grain Sorghum Research Verification – Kevin Lawson (Corn & GS Verification Coordinator)

The Clay County corn field is just beginning R5, which is my latest maturing field.  The field was irrigated on August 3, and will need to be irrigated on August 10 if we don’t get a rain.  We will likely irrigate at least one more time after that.  The Jefferson, Lee, Lonoke, Mississippi, and St Francis corn fields all received their last irrigation earlier this week.  I will be checking Arkansas and White County fields next week for R6 (black layer).

The Chicot County grain sorghum field is getting close to harvest.  With rain in the forecast all next week it concerns me about when we can harvest.  If we had a clear forecast predicted I would have recommended glyphosate this week and then harvest.  But we are going to wait and see what happens with the rain.  Another concern is the increasing levels of sugarcane aphids.  I hope we can harvest next week before the aphids get too bad.  The Prairie County grain sorghum field has a variable maturity due to some low areas in the field, but the good news is headworm numbers were still low enough that we didn’t have to apply an insecticide.

Southeast Arkansas Update – Wes Kirkpatrick (Desha County) & Kevin Norton (Ashley County)

Corn irrigation has pretty much ended.  Many fields are beginning to senesce.  Limited harvest should begin in the next few weeks.

Central Arkansas Update – Brent Griffin (Prairie County)

Final irrigation is being made to most of the corn acreage in Prairie County. Sorghum is turning color rapidly with earworms hanging around. Harvest is getting closer for both.

Northeast Arkansas Update – Herb Ginn (Lawrence County) & Branon Thiesse (Craighead County)

Craighead County – We have terminated irrigation on several fields, with many more scheduled to be terminated next week. Crop condition is excellent at this time. Grain sorghum irrigation has been terminated in some fields. Sorghum continues to turn color and being monitored for headworms. Moth catches were very light this week.

Lawrence County – Many corn fields are very close to black layer now.  In a lot of cases it looks like one more watering will finish things off.  Some Southern Rust has been found in the county on some late planted corn.  We have grain sorghum in many different stages. We have sorghum that is headed fully and changing color and we have some that is in the boot stage. Many growers are hoping we get the rain predicted for later this week.

River Valley Update – Kevin VanPelt (Conway County) & Hank Chaney (Faulkner County)

Early seeded corn is virtually mature.  Southern rust is a threat for very for late planted silage corn.  There were various fields of grain sorghum that reached corn earworm treatment threshold and were sprayed for control.   Sugarcane aphid has also been reported and being treated in the River Valley as well.
