Rice research verification program update for August 4, 2014
Author: Ralph Mazzanti, Rice Research Verification Coordinator

Lower humidity and temperatures during heading and grain fill should help yield and quality.  The overcast and cooler weather has slowed the progression of the verification fields in some cases.  Some fields tend to be 7-10 days behind while others are right in time with DD-50.   The Jefferson County field was treated 7/15 for FAW numbering anywhere from 8-25 per sq. ft.  RSBs have dispersed and are scattered where fields are heading.  No fields have been treated with an insecticide at this time.  Leaf blast was prevalent in the Prairie County field and was treated with a fungicide on 7/22.  There are three fields 100% headed, three fields at late boot, five fields at mid-boot, one field at early boot and three fields at 10% heading.  Sheath blight has been increasing in Lincoln and Lonoke Counties requiring a fungicide treatment.  The Arkansas County field will be the first to drain with DD-50 prediction on 8/6.

Rice progressing normally. No disease or insects problematic at this time however sweeping for RSBs following 75% heading will be essential

Cross Jupiter   2 inch internode elongation Injured rice in field responding well to N application and is noticeably improved over last week although it still has quite a lot of catching up to do. Field should continue to be scouted for diseases and a good flood maintained.   No pests problematic at this time.
Lawrence Mermentau   100% Headed Grain fill is progressing normally. Stink bug population averaging 2.25 per 10 sweeps.   Long horned grasshoppers and other natural predators continue to keep the rice stinkbugs under control at this point. No other pests problematic at this time but sweeping for stinkbugs should continue.   Flood is being well maintained and should continue to be carefully monitored during the crop’s increased water requirements.

Yell Mermentau   Head 2 cm long inside stem Sheath blight well below treatment threshold. All lesions found are in an obvious state of decline due to cool nights this week. Field continues to progress well. No pests problematic at this time however checking on a regular basis for sheath blight and leaf blast should continue.
