Arkansas Corn and Grain Sorghum Weekly Update – July 18, 2014
Author: Kevin Lawson, Program Associate - Corn & Grain Sorghum Verification

Corn and Grain Sorghum Research Verification – Kevin Lawson (Corn & GS Verification Coordinator)

Corn fields continue to progress to the finish.  Some of the fields are about two weeks away from irrigation termination.  With the rain entering the state, we may be down to just one more irrigation!  Southern rust has been found in the state, but the only verification field I found it in this week was Jefferson County, and even there we only found one stop that was positive.  Clay County is the only field I am concerned about applying a fungicide due to the late planting.  Transform was applied in Chicot County for the sugarcane aphids as they had reached upper parts of the plant.

Southeast Arkansas Update – Wes Kirkpatrick (Desha County) & Kevin Norton (Ashley County)

Most corn acres are nearing dent if not already there.  We’ve had some timely rain this week in some areas, but irrigation is the story from here on.  If we get the 2-3 inches of rain predicted through the weekend, irrigation will be terminated on some acres in the area.

Central Arkansas Update – Brent Griffin (Prairie County)

Irrigation continues where rainfall did not occur. Majority of crop is at dough to dent. Pollination issues are scattered across many fields.

Northeast Arkansas Update – Herb Ginn (Lawrence County) & Branon Thiesse (Craighead County)

Craighead County – Rain and cooler weather has helped not only the crop but the producer’s attitudes as well. Irrigation is still continuing except for the areas that received significant rainfall. We are expecting more rain on Friday. There have been reports of southern rust in Craighead County, so scouting for this disease is a priority. Crop is in the beginning dent stage or just prior to that stage.

Lawrence County – Some fields of corn are hitting the dent stage which means irrigation termination is not far off.  Grain sorghum fields in the county continue to head.

River Valley Update – Kevin VanPelt (Conway County) & Hank Chaney (Faulkner County)

Faulkner County – Most producers in the River Valley are waiting to irrigate the crop based on weather forecast. Corn is beginning to dent and any significant rain will go a long way in getting us to maturity.

Conway County – Everything looks good. All but the last planted corn has dented and we’re not seeing any disease. We’ve had enough rain that producers haven’t had to irrigate this week and with the forecast going into the next couple of days, they may not need to for a while.

Heat Units

Heat units really fell below the 30 year average this week with the drop in temperatures that we experienced.
