Soybean cash market and forward booking prices in Arkansas for Dec. 23, 2013-Jan. 3, 2014

This market report covers a two week period of Monday, December 23, through Friday, January 3.  Market reports were disrupted twice during this period for the Christmas and New Year’s Day holidays.  The overall trend of the 2012 Arkansas cash soybean market was downward across the full period.  Market price opened at $13.51 on the first day of the extended period, 11 cents lower than the previous Friday closing average (Figure 1).  The market posted some daily gains, but moved generally lower across the period, especially through the first week of 2014.  The closing statewide average on Friday, January 3, was $13.10, a 51 cent loss from the December 20 Friday closing price prior to this two week period.  High individual market daily quote was $13.89 on December 24 at Old Town/Elaine.  Low quote of the period was $12.64 at Jonesboro on Thursday, January 2.  Closing quotes across all reporting markets ranged from a $12.66 low at Jonesboro to a $13.44 high at Old Town/Elaine.  These end-of -week quotes left the market price range at 78 cents for the second straight week.

New Crop Soybean Market trading quotes for the second and third weeks from USDA-NASS reports showed the new crop market opening on Monday, December 23 with a statewide average of $11.71, 4 cents under the statewide average from the previous Friday close.  Price trended steadily lower through the two week period before closing the period at $11.34 on Friday, January 3, 41 cents under the Friday, December 20 ending price.  High individual market quote of the period was $11.97 at Helena on Monday, December 23.  Low individual market for the period was Des Arc with $10.99 on Thursday, January 2.  The Des Arc low was the only individual market quote reported below $11.00 during the two weeks.  The end-of-week price spread extended from a high of $11.60 at Helena to a low of $11.00 at Des Arc.  These quotes left the market spread at an even 60 cents, 2 cents narrower than the previous week close.
