Cotton heat units indicate termination of inputs is upon us
Author: Arkansas Row Crops

It is pretty obvious that fall is right around the corner.  College football season started last night, the nights are a little cooler, and the leaves on the catalpa trees are starting to fall.  These signs also make it obvious that it’s time to start terminating some inputs on this year’s cotton crop.  As late as this crop is, some fields have needed irrigations and insecticide applications that are normally terminated much earlier in the month.

The following charts show the heat units that have been accumulated up to August 29th.  The column on the left is the date that a field or area has reached cut-out (node above white flower-5), and the column on the right is the amount of heat units that have been accumulated.  Also attached is a chart that lists the point at which inputs can be terminated and when fields should be checked for defoliation initiation.
