Soybean cash market and forward booking prices in Arkansas for April 1-5, 2013
Author: Bob Stark, Agricultural Economist

The Arkansas 2012 cash soybean market lost 13 cents over the weekend break and opened trading on Monday at $14.03.  Unlike the previous week, no early week rally occurred and the market fell steadily each trading day before closing at a low of $13.74 on Friday (Figure 1).  The closing price represented an overall 42 cent net loss from the previous Thursday closing average when the market closed early for Good Friday and was the first sub-$14.00 closing day since November 16.  Market reports resumed at five individual markets that had not provided daily market prices for three weeks and all fourteen regular markets are again reporting old crop prices.  Highest individual daily market price for the week was $14.29 at both West Memphis and Old Town/Elaine on Tuesday.  Low individual daily price of the week was $13.45 on Friday at Jonesboro with Augusta at $13.46 and Des Arc at $13.47.  Individual market quotes on the last trading day ranged from the low of $13.45 at Jonesboro to a high of $13.97 at Old Town/Elaine.  The closing day price spread remained at 52 cents for the third straight week.

The 2013 New Crop Booking Price market had a similar price track as Old Crop Beans despite the absence of a weekend decline.  New Crop beans actually gained 1 cent on Monday over the previous Friday close, but failed to post a gain on any trading day of the week.  The closing day mark was $12.26, a decline of 24 cents from the previous Thursday close for Good Friday (Figure 2).  High individual daily market average for the week was $12.75 at Helena on Monday.  The low market of the week was reported from Jonesboro for the ninth straight week.  The price was $11.98 at both Jonesboro and Augusta on Friday.  The last day of trading quotes found all fourteen state markets at or below the $12.50 level.  Reported market prices ranged from the $11.98 low at both Jonesboro and Augusta to a high of $12.50 at Helena.  These quotes left the statewide closing day price range unchanged at 52 cents compared to the previous end-week.
