Did you know that in 2011 there were over 2.2 million farms in the United States and approximately 1.03 million youth under the age of 19 were living on those farms?
Farms can be a wonderful and exciting environment for children, but without proper training and supervision, they can also be dangerous. Here are some statistics that you might not be aware of:
- Each year over 100 youth die from farm related injuries, with most deaths occurring in the 16 – 19 year age group.
- Of these deaths 23% involve machinery including tractors, 19% were caused by motor vehicles including ATVS, and 16% were the result of drowning.
- Male youth incurred most of those injuries at the rate of approximately 67%.
Parents and educators have made great strides in teaching and protecting our youth over the past 10 to 13 years. As a result of these efforts, farm-related injuries to youth dropped by more than 57% between 1998 and 2009; from 16.6 per 1000 farms to 7.2 per 1000 farms. These statistics, while encouraging, should not keep us from continuing to work hard at preventing all tragic incidents involving children on the far. Please continue working to keep our youth safe and happy on the farm.
