Corn and Grain Sorghum Research Verification Program Weekly Update – May 28, 2012

Corn – Desha, Poinsett and Prairie Counties applied pre-tassel urea followed by irrigations this week.  Arkansas, Drew and Lawrence/Randolph Counties will apply urea before the next irrigation.  The Clay County field had all the recommended units of N applied at sidedress.  Water use is going up in all the fields as they move towards tassel and the reproductive stages.  The fields that are further along are using about 0.30 inches of water a day.  Irrigations are starting to get closer together.  All the fields this year are furrow irrigated.  Common rust can be found in several of the fields down south.  Scouting for southern rust continues, but none has been found.

Grain Sorghum – The Desha County field has recovered from earlier gramoxone drift and will receive the second irrigation.  The St. Francis County field is non-irrigated and really needs a rain.  The field is still holding, but the edges and a few places in the field are showing some drought stress.
