Corn and Grain Sorghum Research Verification Program Final Update – September 26, 2011
Author: Kevin Lawson, Program Associate - Corn & Grain Sorghum Verification

All of the fields have been harvested and as I expected all year long the yields on the corn fields had a wide range. The corn fields ranged from 227.4 to 132.9 bushels per acre.  I am also seeing this wide range of yields as county hybrid trials are being harvested.  This wide range of yields is easy to explain this year.  The majority of the problems (or lack of problems) was caused by the weather.   In Southeast AR, the weather cooperated fully, and the yields are showing it.  In Northeast AR, the weather early, when corn was setting yield hit some fields hard.  Some fields were destroyed by straight line winds from several storms that passed through the area all year long.  The River Valley suffered the heavy drought and some bad winds also.

The grain sorghum fields did very well this year.  Again, weather played a big part in both fields.  The field in St Francis County was a non irrigated field, and received all the necessary rains to make a great yield.  The field was reduced in size by a flood early, but what we got to keep did great.  The field in Woodruff County was irrigated and did well also.  We battled some wet weather early and bird damage, but in the end, it all worked out.

I want to thank all of the producers and County Agents that participated in this year’s Corn and Grain Sorghum Research Verification Program.  This program can’t run without your cooperation and willingness to participate fully.  I also want to thank the Corn and Grain Sorghum Promotion Board for funding this program.  They are always ready to help in any way possible.
